We get a lot of questions about buying online this time of year.

The first thing to know about Heartstrings is that it’s a family company focused a little more on the “in-person” sale and a little less on the web.

But that’s okay!  We absolutely can and do ship online (a lot.)  Also, since we’re based in the midwest you can rest certain that your package will arrive quickly.  This post is to answer a few of the most common questions have prior to placing an order with us.

FAQs

With all these thousands of options, where do I start?

It’s true – we have a HUGE variety of items and charms.  It can get a little daunting.  The key to assembling a locket is asking a few specific questions.

If you’re picking a locket as a gift, ask yourself:

  1. Who is it for?  Although this is the most obvious question, it helps to have the person most clearly in your mind.
  2. How old is that person?  This will help you select sizes.  If it’s for a child younger than 9, we recommend our specialty line of acrylic lockets.  From about 9-12 it’s best to stay with the 20mm Mini or the 25mm Medium.
  3. Do they prefer silver, gold, or rose gold?  If you don’t know, stay with silver.  It’s the most classic and versatile.
  4. Do they like bling or no-bling?  If you’re uncertain, pick the bling!  They can always turn the charms around and wear it on the plain side.
  5. Do they prefer a round shape or a heart shape?  Round shapes generally hold more and are more versatile.  Heart shapes are cute, but they’re not necessarily for everyone.
  6. How tall are they?  All of our lockets include a basic 18-20 inch adjustable chain.  We’ve picked this size because it’s the most universal – equally well suited for someone 5 feet tall to 6 feet tall.  Most of our customers select the basic, complimentary chain.  If you need something more specific and don’t find it on our website, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 312-444-0760.

Once you’ve got a locket in mind, it’s time to fill it with some charms.  The key here is DO NOT GET OVERWHELMED.  It’s easier than it seems.  Here are some best practices…

  1. Think about the size of the locket.  A 20mm Mini will fit only about two birthstones and a charm (and sometimes not even that.)  A 39mm Mega could fit half our collection.  The balance is somewhere in between.
    1. For a 25mm Locket, you’re going to want to stay in the 3-6 charm range.
    2. For a 30mm Locket, stay less than 9 to have a comfortable amount of room. SPECIAL NOTE: Many people keep extra charms and just swap them in when they feel like it.  Don’t worry about selecting too many.
    3. Leave a little room.  One of the greatest things about giving a locket as a gift are all the subsequent gives that come ready-made.  Is Valentine’s Day coming?  Give them an extra charm!  Birthday?  Charm.  There are few celebrations in life that can’t be accented with a charm.
  2. Start with the basics.  A good locket is a blend of personalization and aesthetics.  If you’re at a loss for ideas, start with birthstones or initials.  A very common tactic is a birthstone and a first initial.  It is for someone with kids or grandkids?  Maybe include their birthstones as well.
  3. Go for the identity.  Here’s the part where lots of people get tense, but it’s not too difficult.  In every locket, you hopefully find something very specific to that person.  Not EVERY charm needs to be this specific – usually one will do it – but you want at least one that, pardon the pun, “goes for the Heartstring.”  But how to do it?  It’s easy…
    1. Think about that person.  Make a picture in your head.  What comes to mind about them when you think of them?  Your off to a good start…
    2. What do they do for a living?  Does it define them?  We have a vast array of charms for professions (and more not even listed on the website.  Give us a call if you’re seeking something specific: 312-444-0760
    3. Do they have interests or hobbies?  For example, a music note is an EXTREMELY popular option.
    4. Are they into travel, religious, family focused?  Are they into pop culture?  Do they play any sports?  We have charms for all of these – the key is in deliberately asking yourself these questions.

As always, if you run into trouble we’re available to help at 312-444-0760 or events@yourheartstring.com.  We can also find us at any of our locations listed at the top of this page.
